ISLAMABAD: In a major boost to Pakistan’s domestic energy supplies, the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has started commercial oil production from its newly discovered Bobi Deep-1 well in Sindh, bringing the field online just 26 days after announcing the discovery.
The state-owned exploration and production company informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) on Monday that the well, located in the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease in District Sanghar, is currently producing 2,000 barrels of crude oil per day (BOPD) along with 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD).
The rapid transition from discovery to production—following the announcement of the find on June 3—marks one of OGDCL’s quickest commercial developments and reflects the company’s push to accelerate the monetisation of hydrocarbon discoveries.
To fast-track production, OGDCL laid a 1.5-kilometre, four-inch flowline connecting the well to the nearby Bobi processing plant, enabling the field to be brought into production within weeks.
Operating the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease with a 100 per cent working interest, OGDCL said the achievement would strengthen indigenous oil and gas production, support national energy security and help curb reliance on imported fuels.
The company said the exploratory well successfully tested the Massive Sand interval of the Lower Goru Formation during a cased-hole Drill Stem Test (DST), confirming the commercial viability of the reservoir by producing 2,000 BOPD of crude oil and 1.1 MMSCFD of natural gas.
Beyond the immediate production gains, OGDCL described the discovery as the first hydrocarbon find from the Massive Sand play in the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease, opening a new exploration horizon and significantly reducing geological risk for nearby prospects with the potential to add fresh reserves.
The project had earlier faced complex subsurface conditions that forced drilling operations to be suspended. However, instead of abandoning the well, the company relied on indigenous technical expertise and collaborated with the Centre for Pure and Applied Geology at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, to resolve the geological challenges.
Following extensive geophysical surveys, subsurface studies and engineering evaluations, OGDCL developed a comprehensive geological model, implemented specialised engineering safeguards and successfully resumed drilling to reach the target depth.
The company said the success of Bobi Deep-1 demonstrates the growing capability of local expertise to overcome complex operational challenges and accelerate the development of Pakistan’s hydrocarbon resources. Ends
