ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari met with a high-level delegation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by Mr. Joonho Hwang, Director Energy, to discuss ongoing energy sector reforms, privatization of distribution companies (DISCOs), and opportunities for future cooperation.
During the meeting, the Minister appreciated ADB’s continued support to Pakistan’s energy transition, particularly in promoting the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and facilitating integrated energy planning. He informed the delegation that the government plans to privatize three DISCOs in the first phase, with both investment and technical support from partners being welcomed.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to clean energy and sustainability, pointing out that Pakistan has already shut down around 2,800 MW of fossil fuel-based power plants ahead of schedule. He noted that a new tariff for electric vehicles (EVs) has been introduced and that the government is seeking international cooperation to modernize the grid and metering systems.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s need for access to green financing and carbon credits, underlining the country’s environmental commitments and transition toward renewable energy.
ADB’s Joonho Hwang lauded Pakistan’s reform agenda and reaffirmed the Bank’s strong partnership with the country. He informed that $130 million has been approved for Pakistan’s energy sector, with $30 million immediately available for disbursement. He added that ADB and the World Bank teams would be jointly reviewing projects from the initial stages to ensure optimal outcomes for Pakistan.
Hwang assured full ADB support for Pakistan’s energy priorities, including the privatization of DISCOs, the creation of a national carbon market, and efforts to modernize transmission and distribution networks. He also reiterated ADB’s commitment to advancing renewable energy projects in Pakistan.
The meeting concluded with the Federal Minister reaffirming the government’s resolve to ensure transparency, sustainability, and technological innovation across all energy projects. He stated that the ultimate aim of current policies is to deliver affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity to the public—an objective that hinges on strong international partnerships. Ends
