ISLAMABAD: In a decisive move aimed at ending uncertainty for renewable energy consumers, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Federal Minister for the Power Division, has directed that all net metering applications submitted up to February 8 be processed under the previous regulatory framework.
The order applies to a total of 5,165 applications filed nationwide, which are expected to collectively add 250.822 megawatts of capacity to the national grid. The minister instructed all power distribution companies to ensure immediate implementation of the directive and to facilitate applicants without delay, says the press release issued on February 19, 2025.
The decision also covers K-Electric, along with other electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), which have been told to process pending requests transparently and in accordance with earlier net metering regulations.
The move effectively removes doubts surrounding thousands of pending applications that had been caught in regulatory ambiguity. By allowing them to proceed under the old rules, the government has provided clarity and relief to consumers who had invested in solar installations expecting the previous policy framework to remain intact.
Officials said the approved applications will significantly boost renewable energy integration, strengthening distributed generation and easing pressure on the national grid.
To ensure accountability, the minister has emphasized transparency in processing and advised consumers to lodge complaints through the helpline 118 if they face delays or irregularities.
The directive is being seen as a confidence-building step for the country’s growing solar sector and a signal of policy continuity amid evolving energy reforms. Ends
