KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced the successful completion of workover operations at the Adam West X-1 ST well in the Adam West field, located in the Hala Block, District Matiari, Sindh. PPL operates the block with a 65 percent working interest, along with joint venture partner Mari Energies Limited, which holds the remaining 35 percent.
Hydrocarbons were originally discovered in Adam West X-1—the only well in the Adam West field—in September 2014 within the Lower Goru formation. The well commenced production in June 2015, but encountered water breakthrough in 2019, ultimately leading to a complete halt in gas flow. Earlier efforts to isolate the water-producing zones were unsuccessful. Subsequent reservoir modeling, however, confirmed that a rig-based sidetrack would be a techno-commercially viable solution.
Workover operations began in October 2025, targeting a sidetrack completion above the lower water-producing intervals. The sidetracked well, Adam West X-1 ST, has now been successfully tested, delivering approximately 8.5 MMscfd of gas at a wellhead pressure of 540 psig with a 58/64″ choke.
PPL noted that the sidetrack was a technically challenging and high-risk operation executed with careful planning and coordination. The well is expected to be tied into the Hala production facilities soon after rig demobilization.
