ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s energy sector kicked off the New Year on a high note as Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) announced a major oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well in Kohat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The discovery was made in the Datta Formation within the Nashpa Exploration Block, where OGDC operates with a 65 percent working interest, alongside joint venture partners Pakistan Petroleum Limited (30 percent) and Government Holding (Private) Limited (5 percent carried interest).

Drilled to a total depth of 5,170 meters into the Kingriali Formation, the well was spudded on December 30, 2024, as part of OGDC’s aggressive exploration campaign. Based on open-hole wireline log interpretation, a Cased Hole Drill Stem Test (DST-02) was conducted, delivering impressive results.

The well is currently producing 4,100 barrels of oil per day and 10.5 million cubic feet of gas per day, flowing through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead pressure of 3,880 PSI, confirming the commercial potential of the reservoir.

Industry experts see the discovery as a timely boost for Pakistan, helping narrow the energy demand–supply gap, enhance indigenous hydrocarbon reserves, and strengthen national energy security.

OGDC reaffirmed its commitment to sustained exploration efforts, saying the latest success reflects its resolve to unlock Pakistan’s untapped hydrocarbon potential and support economic stability as the country steps into 2026 with renewed optimism.Ends
