ISLAMABAD: Gas production from the Waziristan Block has reached around 100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) following the addition of 40 MMSCFD from the newly commissioned Spinwam-1 well, building on earlier output from the Shewa-1 discovery, officials said.
The increase also includes approximately 800 barrels per day (BBL/D) of condensate, combining contributions from both fields, marking a significant addition to Pakistan’s domestic energy supply.
The latest production comes from the Waziristan Joint Venture (WJV), led by Mari Energies Limited, with Spinwam-1 representing the second successful exploratory well in the block after Shewa-1, which laid the foundation for initial production from the क्षेत्र.
The project was formally inaugurated at the company’s Islamabad headquarters by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, who said the development would help reduce reliance on imported fuels and strengthen energy security.
Industry officials noted that Shewa-1, the first discovery in the block, had already initiated gas flows into the system, while Spinwam-1 has now significantly enhanced output.
Spinwam-1 is producing 40 MMSCFD of gas and around 200 BBL/D of condensate from the Lockhart reservoir. The combined production from both wells is being fed into the national grid through infrastructure developed by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, linking the two fields.
The Waziristan Joint Venture includes Mari Energies Limited (operator, 55%), Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (35%), and Orient Petroleum Inc. (10%).
Officials described the development as a demonstration of effective collaboration in a challenging operational and security environment.
The inauguration also served as an occasion to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of law enforcement personnel, company staff, and contractors who supported operations under difficult conditions.
Special recognition was extended to Lt. Gen. Anwar Ali Hyder (Retd), Chairman Fauji Group, along with the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), Directorate General of Petroleum Concessions, and other stakeholders.
Managing Director and CEO of Mari Energies, Faheem Haider, said the addition of Spinwam-1 builds on the success of Shewa-1 and reflects the joint venture’s commitment to developing indigenous hydrocarbon resources.
With production scaling up, the Waziristan Block is emerging as an important contributor to Pakistan’s energy mix, with further exploration expected to unlock additional reserves. Ends
