ISLAMABAD: In a significant boost to Pakistan’s energy sector, MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co. B.V. has announced a gas discovery delivering 26.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) from the Bilitang-1 ST-1 well in the Tal Block.

Drilled to a depth of 4,004 meters, the well encountered gas in the Lumshiwal Formation, along with minor condensate volumes. The output translates to approximately 5,065 barrels of oil equivalent per day, indicating strong commercial potential.

The well, spudded in August 2025, was later sidetracked to access higher-quality reservoir zones, a move that paid off with robust flow rates and wellhead pressure exceeding 4,200 psi.

Operated by MOL Pakistan, the Tal Block is a joint venture involving Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Pakistan Oilfields Limited and Government Holdings (Private) Limited.

MOL Group’s Regional Vice President, Ali Murtaza Abbas, termed the development a result of technical innovation and timely execution, while acknowledging government support for exploration activities.

Industry experts view the successful appraisal as a confidence booster for future drilling in the Tal Block, as it confirms reservoir quality and reduces exploration risk.

The discovery is expected to enhance Pakistan’s energy security, support domestic gas supply, and reduce reliance on costly imports, at a time when the country continues to grapple with energy shortages. Ends
