LAHORE: The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) has energized the 220kV Quaid-e-Azam Business Park Grid Station in Sheikhupura, strengthening power infrastructure for industrial development in Punjab and marking another milestone in the expansion of the national transmission network.
The grid station has been developed to meet the electricity requirements of large industrial consumers operating in the Quaid-e-Azam Business Park Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The project, completed at a cost of over Rs. 4 billion, was financed by the Government of Pakistan under the Cash Deposit Loan (CDL) Facility and is aimed at ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted power supply for industrial operations.
Managing Director NGC, Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik, congratulated the project team on the successful energization and commended their technical expertise and professionalism. He said that dedicated power infrastructure for Special Economic Zones plays a critical role in attracting investment, supporting industrial expansion and generating employment. He added that the newly commissioned grid station has been designed to cater to long-term industrial growth and inclusive socio-economic development.
The grid station has a transformation capacity of 500 MVA at the 220/132kV level and is connected to the regional grid through approximately four kilometers of 220kV transmission lines. This configuration enhances system stability, improves voltage profiles and provides the resilience required to handle heavy industrial loads and future demand growth.
According to NGC officials, this is the first grid station commissioned specifically for a Special Economic Zone. It is also expected to reduce the operational burden on existing grid stations in Sheikhupura, Kala Shah Kaku, Bandala (Faisalabad) and surrounding industrial areas.
The project is expected to improve power supply reliability and reduce technical losses, leading to lower downtime, improved productivity and better cost efficiency for industrial consumers. The availability of dedicated and reliable power infrastructure is also likely to encourage new investment, support job creation and strengthen industrial supply chains.
The project was executed under the leadership of Engr. Rashid A. Bhutto, Deputy Managing Director (Asset Development & Management), and Engr. Muhammad Shahid Nazir, General Manager (Project Delivery) North. The project team included Engr. Asghar Mujtaba Khan, Chief Engineer (Project Delivery) North; Engr. Muhammad Usman Warraich, Project Director; Engr. Ahmad Umar Dewan, Executive Engineer; and Sub-Divisional Engineers Rana Muhammad Zahid Hafeez and Sadaqat Ali, along with their technical teams.
Last month, NGC also energized the 500kV Lahore North Grid Station, a major addition to the high-voltage transmission system in Punjab. These recent projects reflect the company’s continued efforts to strengthen grid resilience and support rising industrial and regional power demand. Ends
