ISLAMABAD: In a major boost for Pakistan’s energy sector, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) has announced a significant hydrocarbon discovery at its exploratory well Bobi Deep-1 in Sanghar district of Sindh, with initial testing yielding 2,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) from the Massive Sand interval of the Lower Goru Formation.
The discovery marks the first successful hydrocarbon find from the Massive Sand play within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease and is being viewed as a potentially significant breakthrough for future exploration activities in the region.
Beyond the encouraging production results, the discovery has opened a new exploration window in the area, helping de-risk similar prospects and enhancing the likelihood of future reserve additions. Industry observers believe the success could encourage further exploration campaigns across nearby structures with comparable geological characteristics.
The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the complex subsurface challenges that had previously stalled progress at the prospect. Earlier drilling operations had encountered geological complications, forcing the suspension of activities and raising uncertainty about the well’s future prospects.
Rather than abandoning the project, OGDC launched an extensive technical investigation, drawing on local expertise and scientific research to address the challenges. A multidisciplinary team of geoscientists and engineers collaborated with the Centre for Pure and Applied Geology at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, to conduct advanced geophysical surveys, subsurface studies and detailed field evaluations.
The joint effort led to the development of a comprehensive geological and geophysical model that enabled the company to better understand the subsurface conditions and safely resume drilling operations. Multiple engineering safeguards, specialized civil works and rigorous technical assessments were subsequently undertaken before the drilling rig was redeployed to complete the well.
The successful outcome at Bobi Deep-1 is being regarded as a strong testament to indigenous innovation and technical excellence within Pakistan’s upstream energy sector. It also highlights the value of collaboration between industry and academia in solving complex exploration challenges and unlocking previously untapped hydrocarbon resources. Ends
