LAHORE: Dr. Gohar Ejaz, Patron-in-Chief of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), hosted His Excellency Raimundas Karoblis, Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, for an in-depth discussion on the renewal of Pakistan’s GSP+ status and the future trajectory of Pakistan–EU trade relations.
Dr. Ejaz reaffirmed that Pakistan’s textile sector is among the most compliant manufacturing industries globally. Exporters strictly adhere to international standards covering labour rights, workplace safety, environmental compliance, human rights, and gender inclusion. He emphasized that Pakistan’s textile exporters consistently meet—and in many areas exceed—the requirements under the GSP+ framework.
“GSP+ has brought tangible benefits to Pakistan,” Dr. Ejaz noted. “It has improved working conditions, strengthened labour rights, promoted human rights, and increased women’s participation in the workforce. Pakistan’s business community is grateful for the EU’s continued partnership.”
Acknowledging that challenges remain, Dr. Ejaz stressed that the business community is ready to take ownership, work constructively with the government, and address gaps to ensure full and sustained compliance. He emphasized that transparency, intent, and continuous improvement are critical for the credibility of Pakistan’s GSP+ renewal.
The discussions highlighted the mutually beneficial nature of Pakistan–EU trade. Pakistan exports textiles and value-added goods to Europe, while a significant share of its imports—advanced machinery, technology, and industrial equipment—comes from EU member states. This bilateral trade relationship supports employment, industrial development, and economic growth in both Pakistan and Europe.
Both sides agreed that continued dialogue, mutual trust, and shared responsibility are vital to strengthening the Pakistan–EU partnership and ensuring successful GSP+ renewal, a framework that delivers economic opportunity, social progress, and long-term benefits.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Kamran Arshad, Chairman APTMA; Mr. Asad Shafi, Chairman APTMA North; Mr. Muhammad Qasim, Treasurer APTMA North; Mr. Ahsan Bashir, Former Chairman APTMA; and Mr. Habib Anwar, Senior Member APTMA and French Honorary Consul in Lahore, reflecting strong, unified leadership from Pakistan’s textile industry.
