ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Ali Pervaiz Malik has said that Pakistan Mineral Investment Forum 25 is being held from tomorrow (Tuesday) for two days to showcase the potential of minerals in the country.

Flanked by OGDCL’s Managing Director Mr Ahmed Hayat Lak, the minister said that the harmonized mineral regulatory framework would be unveiled with incentives on value addition to allure local and international investors in the ministerial sector.  He said that in the changing world, all the major economies are eying the rare and critical precious minerals, used in the green energy sector and other sectors. The achievements with regard to gold, copper and other minerals in Pakistan will be showcased in the forum. “We are going to initiate the corporatized, mechanized and responsible mining with the investment from abroad in the shape of JV and from local entrepreneurs in the shape of the public private partnership (PPP). The Geological Survey of Pakistan will be restructured and revitalized at par with international standards to exploit the potential of minerals in Pakistan. The minister also mentioned the efforts of Pak Army, and OGDCL is organizing the event.

About 2000 guests including 300 foreigners would attend the forum. From Türkiye, Azerbaijan, S Arabia, China, US State Department, US Exim Bank, ADB and some CEOs of mining companies from Denmark, Kenya, Finland, and UK will participate in the forum. Some MoUs and agreements would be signed.

“The responsible mining with an impact on the environment and health safety of locals and the mine workers would be undertaken.” The minister said that the mineral sector is a provincial subject and the investors were confused under which policy, they should invest in the sector. This has prompted the government to come up with a harmonized mineral regulatory framework as right now there are 6 mineral policies at provincial levels, 8 Aps, 36 different rules in the mineral sector. “We have developed the harmonized regulatory framework keeping in view the models adopted by Western Australia, Columbia and other countries, and to this effect, White and Case– an international legal firm–played a pivotal role. In the policy, incentives would be announced which have been worked out with the help of Wood Mechanize.

OGDCL managing director Ahmed Hayat Lak said that Pakistan Mineral Investment Forum 25 would be held on a regular basis every year in an improved shape. He said that the management of the event has so far got a tremendous response from within and abroad for the forum. He said that a road map beyond Reko Diq would be marketed in the forum. He said OGDCL and PLL are collaborating for organizing the event. And both companies are also participating in the mineral exploration in various projects in line with their plan to diversify the investments. He said that service sector people would also participate in the event in a big way and today (Tuesday) some discoveries would also be announced in the mineral sector. Mr Lak also said that PGDCL and PMDC (Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation ) are in MoU for cooperation in the mineral sector and have got two blocks in Balochistan and are in the process to get hold of 10 blocks in Gilgit Baltistan (GB).
