ISLAMABAD: The Power Division has directed all power distribution companies (DISCOs) to accelerate the installation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters on government-owned electricity connections, with 90 per cent of the connections to be upgraded by the end of September 2026.
The directive was issued at a meeting chaired by Secretary Power Division Dr Fakhar-e-Alam Irfan, which reviewed progress on the replacement of existing electricity meters installed at provincial and federal government premises.
The meeting was informed that all DISCOs across the country had already commenced the replacement of conventional meters on government connections in compliance with the Prime Minister’s directives.
The initiative is aimed at improving billing transparency and resolving longstanding reconciliation issues relating to government electricity payments and outstanding payables.
The meeting decided that 90 per cent of government electricity connections would be equipped with AMI meters by the end of September 2026, giving DISCOs roughly one month to meet the target.
The Secretary Power Division directed all DISCO chief executive officers to take every necessary measure to ensure timely implementation and achieve the target of replacing 100 per cent of electricity meters on government connections with AMI meters within the stipulated timeline.
The installation of AMI meters is expected to provide more accurate and transparent consumption data, strengthen billing and monitoring mechanisms, and help address disputes and reconciliation issues involving government electricity consumers. Ends
