ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, has started gas production from its Sahitu-1 discovery in Sindh, bringing a new source of indigenous energy online at a time when the country is striving to strengthen domestic supplies and curb dependence on costly fuel imports.
The state-run E&P giant said the Sahitu-1 well is currently producing 6 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) of natural gas, with production expected to rise further as planned expansion of surface facilities is completed.
The start of production comes barely three months after the company announced the discovery of gas reserves in the well, highlighting OGDCL’s efforts to rapidly move new finds from exploration to commercial production.
To accelerate monetization of the discovery, OGDCL has laid a 6-inch, 5-kilometre flowline connecting Sahitu-1 to the Suleman Gathering Facility, from where the gas is processed at the Sinjhoro Plant before being injected into the transmission network of Sui Southern Gas Company.
The Sahitu-1 discovery was made on March 26, 2026, from the Lower Goru Formation (Massive Sand) within the Khewari Exploration Licence located in Khairpur district of Sindh.
OGDCL operates the Khewari block with a 75 percent working interest, while Pakistan Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production Company Limited holds the remaining 25 percent stake.
Energy sector analysts view the development as a welcome addition to Pakistan’s domestic gas production base, which has been under pressure from declining output at mature fields and rising consumption demand. The new supplies are expected to provide incremental support to the country’s gas network while reinforcing efforts to maximize the utilization of local hydrocarbon resources.
In a notification submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, OGDCL said the commencement of production reflects its continued focus on the efficient development and early commercialization of hydrocarbon discoveries, helping unlock value from Pakistan’s untapped energy reserves.
The latest achievement further strengthens OGDCL’s position as the country’s leading upstream energy company and underscores its role in advancing Pakistan’s energy security agenda. Ends
