ISLAMABAD: In a major policy breakthrough aimed at easing the financial burden on electricity consumers, the Power Division has slashed smart electricity meter prices by up to 40 percent following sweeping regulatory reforms and a more competitive procurement process.
Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari said on Monday that the reduced prices for distribution companies (DISCOs) are expected to translate into national savings of Rs150 billion, terming the move a key step toward improving efficiency in the power sector and providing tangible consumer relief.
Under the revised pricing structure, the cost of a three-phase smart meter has been cut from Rs45,000 to Rs25,000, while the price of a single-phase meter has been reduced by Rs7,000.
The minister said the reduction was made possible through amendments to Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) regulations, which removed long-standing procedural bottlenecks and opened the market to international suppliers. The resulting increase in competition, he said, significantly drove down prices.
Lower smart meter costs will directly benefit consumers by reducing payments required under demand notices, easing the financial burden on households and businesses.
Awais Leghari said smart meters would also help curb electricity theft, eliminate faulty meter readings, and improve billing accuracy. Consumers will have access to prepaid billing, real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, and detailed usage data.
He added that smart meters will enable faster power restoration without the involvement of linemen, enhance transparency, and give consumers greater control over electricity use.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Power Division said it remains focused on modernizing the power sector and delivering affordable, transparent, and efficient electricity services across the country.
